Charles Dickens “The Pickwick Papers”

With Charles Dickens again we see references to hockey in multiple illustrations from “The Pickwick Papers”. ¬†First published in 1836, there is an illustration called “Mr. Pickwick Slides” where we see on the ice a hockey stick, bung, and a curling broom. Later versions of the illustrations show ice skates on the bank of the pond.

Charles Dickens & Hockey

Many people do not know this, but the famous author Charles Dickens in one of his early works “Sketches By Boz” gives a description of the game of ice hockey in England around 1836. In the chapter “The Broker’s Man” we see Dickens describe a character as “a cork bung being played hockey with”.
